What are some of the most common overlooked but extremely important financial documents that need attention when going through a divorce?

The biggest thing that many people overlook is updating their beneficiary information. Most couples often have their spouse as their primary beneficiary and in the event of a divorce, it’s very important to make sure your financial accounts are all updated. If you have any bank account information linked to your financial accounts, this also needs to be updated. Make sure that your address and phone number(s) are up to date as well.

What is the difference in Notary Public versus Medallion Signature Guarantee?

Most people who perform signature guarantees are also Notary Public’s, the reverse is not necessarily true. It requires a higher credential to perform a medallion signature guarantee than it does to notarize a document. When a notary public notarizes a document, the individual verifies that the signor appeared to be the person he/she claimed to be and that she signed the document. The notary does not guarantee that the signature is valid. With a signature guarantee, however, the person is also verifying the identity of the signor and also guarantees that the signature is valid. The Signature Guarantee is usually used for certain financial and securities related transactions.

How do you change your account registration to add a married last name or to amend back to your maiden name?

There’s a form that LPL requires you to sign that requests an account update – name change. The form has to be sent with either a marriage certificate, divorce decree or another official court document to support the name change. Once this has been submitted, your account can be updated within 2-3 business days.
