It’s that time of year again, when everyone is starting to look forward in the most idealistic way, planning and prepping to become the best possible version of themselves!
People start New Year’s Resolutions with the best of intentions, and it can be a good time to recognize the need to make positive changes in your life. However, many have trouble sticking with those resolutions. Sometimes the goals are too high, the self expectations can be far out of reach and sometimes you simply may not be ready to make the changes you desire.
The best way to “ignite” changes in the New Year’s and stick to them is to be realistic. Here are some tips that may make it a little easier to stick with your resolutions.
- Start Small – set a goal that you desire and believe that you can stick to.
- Set Realistic Goals – Starting off with extreme expectations is a set up for failure. For example going to the gym 3 times a week may be more obtainable than promising 5 times per week.
- Limit Your Resolutions – Make one change at a time. Don’t try to give up sugar, go to the gym 3 times a week and vow to stop eating out. Accomplish one goal at a time (you can make resolutions at anytime during the year once you have accomplished a goal).
- Be kind to yourself when you falter – when you don’t stick with your goal being kind to yourself is the best way to begin again tomorrow.
- Get a buddy system – one of the best ways to accomplish goals is to have a good support system.
- Put Your Resolution in Writing – things tend to make a larger impression in our minds when we see it written down (and look at it daily).
New Year’s is a fun holiday, full of excitement and new beginnings. It’s a great time for a fresh start or a new goal. But remember, just because it’s a new year it doesn’t mean you need to go overboard.
