T is for Thrifty Travel Tips

Are you feeling the need to get out of town, way out of town, say internationally? When planning a trip abroad for summer vacation, there’s much to consider; where to go, where to stay, and how to stay within your budget? With this in mind, let’s go over a few “thrifty travel tips”:

  • First, make sure your passport is up to date and ready to go! Having to renew or apply on short notice will cost more money.
  • Consider using the accumulated air miles you have been saving. Saving on airfare allows you to use the money saved on other travel needs, such as lodging, food, and incidentals.
  • The more flexible you are with your travel time and destination, the easier it will be to search for great deals on flights all over the world. Sites like Vayama, and AirFareWatchdog are just two to get you started. Don’t forget to check large travel websites and airline websites for last-minute travel deals.
  • If you are lucky enough to live in a tourist destination try swapping houses. There are three types of exchanges:
    • Simultaneous exchange – not always easy to coordinate.
    • Non-simultaneous exchange – stay at a home-swapper’s second home.
    • Hospitality exchange – Stay as guest in a swapper’s abode while they are also in the house
    • House swapping has the potential for tremendous savings for both parties, try sites like Homeexchange and LoveHomeSwap.
  • Dodge the foreign exchange fee, get a credit card that does not charge foreign transaction fees. There are many to choose from but be sure and find one without an annual fee attached.
  • Avoid unnecessary mobile fees. Making phone calls and using data can be costly. Find free local Wi-Fi and check on apps, like WeChat that allows you to text for free.
  • Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas; if not purchase traveler’s insurance that fits your needs.

Travel abroad is an enriching and wonderful experience. Hopefully, following these thrifty tips will allow you to enjoy many more of these fabulous opportunities during your lifetime.
